First roots selection from Stone Rock, and a great one. Check it out...
Recently German labels popped up with various great roots reggae productions. After years of root-less riddims in Germany you suddenly have the big bad Doctor's Darling riddim, the Elemental riddim from Mystic Dan, just to name a few, and this only over a period of few months. On this year's Summerjam festival, another German roots selection saw the light - the Baba Peng riddim from a new label called Stonerock Prod.. Summerjam is already a few months behind, and I apologise big time for holding this back so long, but better later than never.

This riddim is definetely no joke. Heavy snare, powerful bassline and melancholic horns (somehow reminding me of a melody in a 90's PC adventure game) are the garants for getting this riddim on steady rotation in the venues. The sound is deep and well-mixed, the vinyl a good pressing. The distrubution by Soundquake guarantees that the riddim gets spread at least in Europe.

Don't get confused by the relatively unknownness of the artists featured on this riddim, they're all worth hearing. Uncle Tom comes up with a nice conscious tune. The peculiar (British?) pronounciation gives one the feeling of Madness singing over a roots riddim, which isn't bad at all. But the truly highlight of the selection is a man called Junior Dan performing in a unique manner, reminding very much of 70's deejay style with minor singers influence, somewhere between Bob Marley and U-Roy. The man sings like he just got warped through a time machine from the 70's. Absolutely great! Next tune is a combination, half-French and half-Patois. Okay tune, but nothing outstanding, and I can?t tell anything about the French part as I'm not capable of this language at all. Last tune is from Singin' Gold, a tune with a positive message (the effort of education), but with a tacky hookline.

All in all, it's a solid production that doesn?t need to hide from most of the recent roots riddims out there. The tunes are not all on the same standard, but for the sake of the two first ones, it deserves a 5-star ranking without question.

Tracklist

  1. Uncle Tom - Sometimes
  2. Junior Dan - Early Yesterday
  3. Mal Élevé & Dizzy Deman - Don't Stress
  4. Singin' Gold - Labor For Learning
