Cla.at: What is your most precious dubplate or the one you love most?
Coxsone: Well, I got so much dubplate? I could not just name one dubplate I like, but I can tell you about a dubplate that is very famous for the sound and to me as well, it?s a dubplate done by Lee Perry, the Artist was Colla Red (?) and the name of the tune is "From Creation". I love that tune, because when I play that tune a lot of sounds use to be frightened when I?m playing in competition. Every man is scared of that tune, that?s a weapon for me, and I always hold it back for the lasts before I play it, you know. But since that I moved on thousands of dubplates, you know. I go to Jamaica regular, cut dubplates and come back, because that?s the business. If you are in the sound business you got to cut lots of music, ?cause music is the game, you know? And the equipment has to be top class to go out there, because you got some young youth who is building sound, they look at us old soundmen, and when they are going to build their sound, they gotta build something bigger than they see out there to conquer you, you know. So Coxsone always have his gloves up, remember, good box and always keeps his guard up. I, Sir Coxsone Outtanational, I always keep my guard up, because even if I?m playing with someone, and it?s just an ordinary dance, they still forcing competition to me, everybody wants to knock me off. But that?s good, I don?t mind?

Cla.at: In some interview I read that you were good friends with Bob Marley, tell us a little bit about that.
Coxsone: Well, Bob was my good friend. We spent a lot of time together in Jamaica, and when he was in England, we spent a lot of time playing football together and doing things together, you know? It was a big loss when we lost Bob, but Bob Marley came to do a good work, he establish reggae worldwide, and we love him dearly. I wish his family well and everything, and everywhere we go as Rasta and play reggae, we are recognized by Bob Marley. Even if someone don?t know us, him call "Hey, Rasta! Bob Marley!", and that?s good, you know. So big up Bob Marley every time. He?s a number one reggae man worldwide.

Cla.at: Besides Bob Marley, which artists you rate most, as well past as present?
Coxsone: Well, there are some many. You got the great Dennis Brown, I love Dennis Brown. I love Gregory Isaacs, Beres Hammond, then this new group Morgan Heritage, making a big name, you know, Ken Boothe, Alton Ellis, John Holt, I could name every artist. And all I don?t call, I love them, because it?s their music that I play that makes me what I am. So all of them is my favourite artist.

Cla.at: What do you think about this new UK dub style, like Iration Steppers or Disciples produce it? You play that style too?
Coxsone: Well, there is a thing going on in England about this roots and culture ting. There are people in England making certain kind of dub music. Yes, it?s going well, but I take my sound not too much into this type of selection, but I do play some of them, you know. ?Cause I?m not playing for myself, I?m playing for the others, so I have to buy some of those tunes too. But what I call good roots and culture, is not just a little riddim that?s going on without anything. Roots and culture is good vocals, good protest music, you know what I mean? Music about Africa, oppression of people, freedom of people, you know, people who live inna vacuum and want to come out a that vacuum, and sing about things that happen to them in their life. That?s what I call proper roots and culture. Nelson Mandela was supposed to be free, and all the reggae artists sing the tune "Free Nelson Mandela", things like these are the type of music that is real music, but the youths come along with their own style that they want to do as well. So I don?t criticise some of the new music, because that?s what the youths want. I mean, we got certain music that we grow with, coming from blue beat, coming to ska, coming to rocksteady, and then we come to reggae. And we enjoy every moment of the era of rocksteady and blue beat, some of the greatest Jamaican music come through rocksteady. This new youths now, who is coming up in Jamaica, they are got their thing going, you know. Even the rap business, the deejay business, it?s Jamaica who start the deejay business, U-Roy and I-Roy, right? Ranking Trevor, Big Joe, you know what I mean? Now we have new deejays, Bounty Killer, Buju Banton, Beenie Man, Mr.Vegas, Spragga Benz, you name it, they are very good. And they are doing things in their time now, that we have to listen to, whether we like it or not. This is their time. So, what I do, I buy some of the tunes they done, and play it. Yes, sometimes we get wild and play a lot of this raga ting as well, you know. We are no exceptable from no one. We can play the ragga ting all night ! But we prefer to entertain, you know? We prefer to entertain?

Cla.at: What do you think about the development of the UK reggae scene? Is their still nuff music produced in the UK?
Coxsone: Yeah man, there is a lot of good music being produced in the UK, you know? Some selectors prefer just to play Jamaican music, I play every music across the board, because we haffi encourage the youths in England. There is good reggae coming out of England, also good reggae coming out of different parts of Europe. It?s not just Jamaica alone anymore. I play many music out of the UK, but as I say, some of them big radio disk jockeys, they don?t give them a chance, and I think it?s a pity. I am trying to give them as much chance as I can. It?s my job to play people music, you know? There are people out of the ghetto, who are down, and you want to help them to get them pon a new way of life, so we have to play their music and encourage them, ?cause you have some people, they are bad people, but they make a record, and once you hear it playing over the radio, then they become good people, they change. So we have to encourage that, you know. But yeah, you got lots of very good reggae in England. You got Jetstar, Mr. Palmer, very good friend of mine. And right now he?s producing, he?s got his own studio over there in Cravenbourgh (?), and he?s producing a hell lot of good singers. You?ll find Luciano on his label, possible Beres Hammond, all the artists. The label is "Charm". I?ll send you most of his things when I get back. Now that we are speaking about this, I?m going to make sure that I?ll send you a lot of tunes that are big in the UK, so that you can see the large amount of reggae that is being produced in the UK.

Cla.at: Is there something you would like to give our readers on their way?
Coxsone: I would like to say to everyone, that you must practice peace. Peace and love, you know? And be honest, and help people when you can. And live in harmony and peace, because all of us are His Majesty?s children.
No matter where you come from, my message is peace and love for everyone. Worldwide.
I love everyone. I?m Lloydie Coxsone.
