Stonerock Productions, the label that already brought you some nice roots riddims straight outta Germany, like the Baba Peng and the Jah Road, are here again with a new release. I had the honour to check out the new selection called Crisis riddim, and I can say I'm positively surprised again..

The first thing I happened to listen to was the version, and well, it was a kinda unusual experience. Imagine a heavyweight rub-a-dub drum structure paired with the chirping guitar-somethings from early digital pieces like "Lazy Body", and you'll have this one. Though, just having the version, it might leave you quite unsatisfied: this riddim just cries for disco-style echo playabouts, and the snare is kinda "flat". But then the first tune drops in, and sways away all the unsatisfactory thoughts. I doubt one has ever heard a Luciano like this. On "Work Harder", the man with the round hat leaves his foible for opera-like melodies and delivers some end-80s style I never heard from Luciano before. He reminds me so much on Echo Minott on this one, especially considering the riddim elements. Refreshing! While the riddim might appear a bit dull on its own, Luciano has chosen the right technique to go over it and make something very special out of it.

Off to the other tunes... We have Queen Ifrica here delivering a tune with heavy lyrics. "As A Woman" is a tune dealing with special way women can and should affect politics to make this world better. "Hey Laura, ask Bush whats up / Missis Sharon you nuh see the Middle East plan stop? / Missis Blair, whisper in a Tony ear / Tell him that the kids are dying everywhere"... Clever approach, dealing with worldwide problems apart from the usual "evil babylon" talk. Truly conscious music!
It's also cool to see Tony Rebel on this selection, since he wasn't around too much in the last months, except from his controversial juridical feud with dhr.com. "Innerman" is one more conscious tune apart from the everyday "bun dis bun dat", calling the people to check themselves first - "Tek a look inna yuh inner man, check if yuh a sinner man...". Tony is definitely in a good shape here, unlike some of his unmotivated tunes on some digital riddims in the last years. Congrats to the Stonerock crew to get the artists so fresh! But not enough with that, they also are representin' themselves with a tune on this selection. "Time Bomb" is what you might call a "posse track" if this was hiphop, carried out with a solid portion of humour. Definetely worth a listen, I was even laughing out loud listening to the lyrics.

All in all, as I already said, one could have done far more out of the riddim itself, but in its basic structure it's already far more interesting than the many pompous and loveless nu-roots productions nowadays. The selection is "all killers - no fillers" and highly enjoyable musical- and lyrical-wise. Let's hope it gets much soundboy play-time!
