Due to a good load of promotion copies we received this month from Roughtrade Records, we´re a bit late with this section, but nevertheless we took a deeper look onto Mad Cobra´s eargerly awaited album "Words of Warning", Gregory Isaacs´s "Give it all up", Capleton´s latest masterpiece "The people dem" and a german compilation that goes into the fourth round now - "Dancehall Fieber 4". The first "Dancehall Fieber" Sampler was released in 2000 and with each year, DHF Records released another one, that well represented a good cross-section of basically german-speaking reggae, including artists from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and their native dialects. Part of the concept is to unite already well known artists as well as upcoming talents, a fact that makes the compilation really interesting. Even if the name is "Dancehall Fieber", the CD does not musically tie itself down to a specific genre, but features dancehall-tracks (e.g. Benjie, Dr. Ring Ding, Ischen Impossible amongst others) as well as Roots (Ganglords ft. Phenomden, Skyjuice, Ganjaman amongst others), Soca (Culcha Candela and Texta) and the likes, so do not take the headline too serious.

Recommended tunes are Ischen Impossible´s "Boom", Ganglords ft. Phenomden "Cha nüt defür" (Don´t understand a word, but it´s just funny and rocks), Kimoe & Harris "Clap ya hands" (Nice and original german dancehall interpretation) and Eduardo´s "Die Zeit kommt" (Nice singer tune). In fact all other tunes are nice as well, but that´s a matter of personal taste and this sampler will for sure fill anyones likings and should therefore not miss in anyones collection.

If you are a bit familiar with Capleton tunes and have a look over the tracklist, you may notice that most of the tunes have already been released on compilations and/or 7 inch. "Mass Media" for example is more than three years old now, but in fact this is nothing that makes this record a bad one at all. Over the past time Capleton for sure had a low-down with a good amount of tunes, but this one unites the very best of his recent work on a recommendable collectors item.

Born Ewart Everton Brown, better known to most of us as Mad Cobra is one of the DJ´s that influenced the 90´s topmost with the likes of Ninjaman, Supercat and others who were notorious for introducing a new level of badman and slackness lyrics. Expectations were high as Cobra did not release any Longplayer since 2001´s "Cobra" which was his 7th release after numerous singles. What we all asked ourselves - What to expect of the 90´s DJ in todays dancehall biz with his latest "Words of Warning"? Well, as far as this release is concerned - 90´s styles at it´s best!

What starts with a nice and contemporary roots combo with Yami Bolo ("War Monger") already developes into a retro 90´s digital release with the second tune ("Rudeboy"). The roots topic gets picked up again twice with a feature with Michael Rose on "Words of Warning" and a solo on "Ghetto Youth Pressure". The rest sounds more or less like re-modelled 90´s riddims and Cobra delivers tunes on them that we never would have thought to be released on an up-to-date album that was completely produced by Bunny Gemini as well as the Gregory Isaacs mentioned above. But being a 90´s-riddims fan for long time (and not afraid to admit!) that thing plays on heavy rotation since arrival now. As the roots parts sound perfectly engineered and mastered, the 90´s counterparts sound a little bit "dusty", which even raises the "nostalgic" feeling somehow, but got critized rightly by many others as well.
Mad Cobra, who originally took his artists name from the villians in the G.I. Joe Comic book series, still releases actual dancehall hits nowadays, so we tend to rate this Longplayer as a "sound experiment" and in our eyes this works out fine. A record that will stay in our ears for long at last and should not miss in any starters collection as well.
