Gentleman - Runaway EP / Fourmusic / 2003
There is no need to loose big words about Gentleman. The conscious singjay from Cologne, Germany, is a big name not only in his home country, but also in the worldwide reggae scene. After two chart-topping albums, various singles and a recent winning of the Echo (the official award of the German music industry), Gentleman comes up with new material, packed on a deluxe EP.
The title-tune on this CD is the well-known 'Runaway', voiced over Pow Pow's Celebrate riddim and already included in the 'Journey To Jah' album. Solid dancehall tune about serious matters, maybe Gentleman's best tune when it comes to dancehall. The next tune is a combination with the 'fireman' Capleton, voiced over a nice roots riddim produced by Silly Walks outta Hamburg. Though the voicing is a splice, it's a really wicked combination, with Capleton delivering original lyrics and no recycling. The next one is a combination with Luciano the 'messenger' and the upcoming singer Taffari, as far as I know voiced together in Cologne after last year's Summerjam. Over a rnb-like instrumental, the three artists deliver conscious lyrics to the maximum. Next tune, 'What She Deserves', is a combination again, this time with the great Glen Washington, addressing all women and babymothers. On both tunes, Gentleman proves himself not only as performer, but as well as a good instrumentalist, playing piano, percussion and brass. The last two tracks are an acapella of 'What She Deserves' for all the remix freaks out there, as well as a live recording of 'Runaway' from a festival in Stuttgart, giving insight into Gentleman energy-loaded live performances.
But the CD doesn't restrict to audio at all. Insert this one into your PC, and you'll find loads of multimedia material like biography, wallpapers, screensaver and, best of all, two full-length videos. All this connected through a stylish and user-friendly interface. The CD comes in an exquisite papersleeve and features a 12-page booklet including all the lyrics. All this makes this record a definitely worth-buying collector's item which you should purchase before it's sold out. Available at all big recordstores and online shops.
