Very few musicians can claim to have been a sideman to a major 20th century musical legend. Brooklyn native,
Gregory "Mr. Bassie" Dale Jackson can.
Jackson rocked many concert halls as anchor and bassist for the legendary
Burning Spear a.k.a. Winston Rodney. For three years Jackson toured North and South America, Africa, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand – with Burning Spear and his year 2000 grammy award winning ensemble.
Gregory "Mr. Bassie" D. Jackson
From his very first international touring experience with the New York Youth Symphony in 1982 through to his concert tour of South Africa in December 2001 Jackson has lead an eclectic career. Gregory studied piano during his early teens and was mentored in classical repertoire by the bassist, Dr. Art Davis.
Jackson sat as principal bassist for the Westchester Youth Symphony for two years and sat first chair for the New York State Youth Symphony - performing in Carnegie Hall and Detroit Symphony Hall in tours during his teen years.
When he entered his college years at age 18, Jackson turned his attention toward his interests in jazz and world music. He freelanced in the European jazz scene and alongside New York jazz hipsters such as Sir Roland Hanna, Kenny Burrell, and Sonny Sharrock, a former sideman to Miles Davis.
After earning his stripes in the jazz scene Jackson shifted gears and moved into the bass playing trenches of Kingston Jamaica – living and working on the island nation.
During this period Jackson developed a dry and heavy tone and organic elliptical groove, which earned him respect from his Jamaican peers - working in the Kingston studios, the North coast hotel circuit, and with Tuff Gong Records.
"
For a long time, I followed what others where doing, in order to be taken seriously. After some soul searching I found that my own approach to life and music is worth attention."
After his stint with Burning Spear, Jackson set his sites on the broader world of neo soul, hip hop, and acid jazz - traveling to and from music Mecca’s such as New York, Sao Paulo, Brussels, London and Vienna building upon his unique approach.
Gregory Jackson’s writing skill and dry and heavy bass tone can be heard on new albums by recording artists Amy Winehouse, Simply Red, Midnight, Joss Stone, Maxi Priest, Trina Broussard and Jill Scott.
Jackson is a member of Gordon "Commissioner Gordon”" Williams acclaimed writing and production unit, operating out of New York, NY. Additionally Jackson writes and produces for
Igrade records, NYC, and De Pianofabriek in Brussels, Belgium.
