PowPow Movement will from now on not only be own as an excellent Soundsystem that has proven well enough on international ground, but also as an excellent production team as they´re going to present their first riddim, the "Celebrate Riddim". So let´s celebrate and tune in..
Celebrate Riddim / Label: Pow Pow Movement / DE&JA / 2002
Pow Pow Movement is for true Germany's top-a-top sound. Being there since the early 90's, representing Europe pon World Clash 2001... They reached many goals other European sounds can only dream of. Naturally, everyone asked theirselves for several years, why don't Pow Pow produce own tunes ? Finally, this goal is reached aswell. After some years of rumors from the massive and hard work from Ingo, Pow Pow brings us a selection that can easily hold up with Jamaican productions.
In its structure, the riddim itself is what I would call timeless. Pow Pow do not follow trends, but create what must have been the image of the perfect riddim in their heads. Classical bass-bass-snare drum structure, combined with latino-style guitar sounds and athmospheric strings. On first sight, it reminds of some 1999 riddims, especially of Skatta's Latino Riddim, but hearing it some more times proves the 100% originality. It brings back the spirit of late 90's riddims (a time when the producers weren't in that "who brings the cheapest sounds and the wierdest drum structures" competition) without sounding outdated. Nothing experimental, but a really solid one, a soundboy can't do wrong playing this one.
Concerning artist line-up, Pow Pow went the right way, neither voicing cheap newbies nor follow the current "top-a-top artists" trends. It's like "all killers no fillers" - you don't have Degree and Richie Stephens on every riddim selection nowadays. It's even hard to say which tune is best in this selection, I like them all very much. It's especially nice to have two relatively new bobo artists pon the riddim, Turbulence and Jah Mason, both delivering very uplifting vibes, pure righteousness, no slack talk. Degree comes with a smashing bashment tune, one of the best of his recent tunes i'd say. Danny English, Richie Stephens and Mr.Easy deliver very nice gyal tunes, of which i like English's one most, though I'm normally not a big fan of his style. But the real hit of this selection is the great Gentleman tune, "Runaway". Fi true?, he doesn't need to hide from any Jamaican artist with this one. It's already a big tune here in Germany, featured on Gentleman's top-20 ranked longplayer. Nice to see people make big tunes with 100% conscious lyrics...
Check the stores in middle of July to get this top selection, and as a little teaser, Ingo from Pow Pow made a nice mix exclusively for us. Big up !
